Overview

Phoenix Kitchen, nestled within the bustling QV Melbourne precinct, offers a compelling slice of authentic Cantonese cuisine. This Chinese restaurant shines particularly bright in its specialty: barbecued meats served with expertly prepared rice dishes. Located at 210 Lonsdale Street, it’s an ideal spot for both office workers seeking a flavorful lunch and families looking for a satisfying dinner.

The highlight here is undoubtedly the roast duck, whose skin achieves a delicate crispness while the meat remains juicy and flavorful. Regular patrons rave about the balance of textures, from tender to slightly gamey, and the tender char on the BBQ pork that carries the perfect blend of sweetness and savory notes. Complementing these meats are generous rice servings, often paired with a light omelette and fresh salad to cut through the richness.

Phoenix Kitchen excels in variety too. From the BBQ pork and red sausage combo sets to the unique eggplant and beef dish, the menu caters to traditional tastes as well as those eager for a hearty twist. Signature single set meals, featuring roasted duck or BBQ pork on rice with special DIY sauce salads, highlight the skillful layering of flavors and textures that define Cantonese barbecue.

The dining experience at Phoenix Kitchen fits well within its vibrant food court setting. Service is straightforward and efficient, reflecting an environment that values quick turnover without sacrificing quality. The atmosphere remains welcoming, drawing a diverse crowd ranging from solo workers to families, as noted by visitors who appreciate the availability of children's seating and attentive staff.

Customers share consistent praise for the generous portions and freshness of ingredients. Despite occasional staffing challenges, the kitchen maintains a reliable standard and swift delivery of meals. Added incentives like complimentary Hong Kong-style French toast for orders over a certain amount enhance the overall value, making it a smart choice for those who love authentic flavours at practical prices.

In summary, Phoenix Kitchen serves as one of Melbourne's standout spots for Cantonese roast meats. Whether you crave the crispy, succulent roast duck or the classic BBQ pork with its smoky char, this restaurant delivers richness and authenticity in every bite. Its central location, quality fare, and warm yet efficient service create a memorable dining experience tailored for both locals and visitors eager to explore genuine Chinese barbecue culture.

Hong Kong style BBQ meat in a food court setting. I have been here several times for lunch and early dinner. And I do enjoy the BBQ meat and rice set meal ($21.80-22.80) - the meat portion is generous and fresh, an omelette drapes over the white rice, and there is some salad on the side. Roast duck - a layer of thin, crispy skin and meaty, slightly gamey meat; BBQ pork - "cha siu" flavour with a nice balance of meat and fat, and burnt bits; Crispy Pork - crispy skin with distinct layer of meat and fat (and it does not have that typical aroma of a male pig, which is a plus). Service is as expected in a food court setting.

I’ve been to Phoenix Kitchen multiple times, and I keep coming back for one thing — their incredible roast duck rice! The duck skin is always crispy, the meat juicy, and the flavour spot on every single visit. It’s consistently delicious and never disappoints. The portion is generous, served with fluffy rice and a tasty omelette on the side. The staff are friendly and efficient, and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. This is hands down one of the best roast duck rice spots in Melbourne — highly recommended if you’re craving authentic Cantonese roast duck. #genastar

Always glad for more roast duck options in the CBD after Pacific House (opposite QV) closed down. I was a bit put off by the reviews for this new place in the QV food court but pleasantly surprised with the food. Had the char siu and duck on rice and there’s an omelette and unnecessary green garnish included (dump the greens!) Portion was bigger than other roast meat outlets and the flavour was decent too. A bit pricey with the holiday surcharge at $26 though.

Would say that this place is my most favourite for roasted meat so far, especially the duck was super nice, skin is so crisp. On the advertisement said I can substitute a rice to fried rice by paying $1.5 extra but when I order I pay $2.5 also they will be no egg on top if you change to fried rice so I think I won’t change the rice anymore when I come next time. Even it’s just a takeaway shop in food court but the service was very good. My husband was curious about the taste of the pork sausage if it so salty and the lady at the counter was giving him a few pieces to try, he was so impressed since he didn’t expect that.
